JHC Wins Building of the Year, Excellence in Design Award for JATC Project

April 25, 2024 JHC Commercial, LLC (Joseph Hughes Construction) of Portland, Oregon was recently awarded the American Buildings 2024 Building of the Year Excellence in Design Award for the NW Line JATC project. This state-of-the-art facility serves as headquarters of the Northwest Line Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee and a training center for aspiring linemen—skilled professionals who specialize in high-voltage power lines.

The project encompasses two custom metal buildings totaling over 40,000 sf. The main building boasts eave and ridge heights of 32’ and 48’, respectively, sufficient to house lineman poles in a 14,000 sf indoor training yard. Amenities include a mezzanine overlooking the training area, translucent wall panels that convey natural light, classrooms, office, and storage. An 18,000 sf structure houses a board room, conference and break rooms, offices, a commercial kitchen, and three partitioned classrooms that easily convert into a 5,000 sf multipurpose room. An IMP roof was used to meet code requirements, while the walls utilized a stylish mix of IMP, CMU, and flat panel siding.

The highly anticipated Excellence in Design Awards competition is open to all American Buildings Authorized Builders. The awards recognize Builders’ metal building projects for their innovation, diverse application, and distinction in design in the metal buildings industry. Winners are selected by an independent panel of judges.

This year, judges chose from over 130 entries and selected the best projects in each of the following categories: Agriculture; Auto Dealership; Church/Religious Centers; Commercial; Government/Institutional; Manufacturing/Industrial; Office; Recreation; Retail; Special Projects; Transportation; and Warehouse/Distribution.

Winners were announced for each category and top category winners were eligible to compete for the Excellence in Design top awards: Bronze, Silver, and Building of the Year.

“We’re delighted to showcase the skill and innovation of our Builders through the 2024 Excellence In Design competition,” said Carlie Smith, Marketing Director for Nucor Buildings Group. “These award-winning projects are as beautiful as they are functional, demonstrating the versatility of metal buildings in today’s competitive and fast-paced construction industry. This year, submissions were strong in many categories, including transportation, manufacturing/industrial, and government/institutional markets. Our Builders never fail to impress us with how they utilize our building systems with style and creativity. We are honored to award the 2024 Building of the Year to JHC Commercial for the NW Line JATC project.”
